The shareholders who own McLaren are commonly referred to as the Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company. This public company consists of a few dozen highly skilled artisans in a factory in south England who have been producing these elite luxury supercars for years and years. So yes, McLaren is British.

This no-nonsense, English factory produces up to 20 McLarens per day, which are then shipped to almost 100 McLaren dealerships across the world. The History of McClaren

Founded in 1963 by Bruce McLaren, McLaren was originally owned by the Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Company. When he passed in 1966, the company was deeded to Teddy Maye who ran it throughout the 1970s.

From 1981 onward, the McLaren Group’s largest individual shareholder, CEO, Chairman, and Director was Ron Dennis. Under his leadership, the company’s name was changed to the McLaren Group and later changed again to the McLaren Technology Group in 2015. Rob Dennis was McLaren’s closest thing to an owner for the majority of its existence, and for much of his reign, Mercedes-Benz (Daimler Motors) owned the actual highest stake in the company. However, their holdings were bought out in 2011, and McLaren became an independent automotive company again. 

In 2017, Ron Dennis’ stake was bought out by the other shareholders. Now the largest shareholder of the McLaren Group is the Bahrain Mumtalakat Holding Company, the sovereign wealth fund for the Kingdom of Bahrain. In other words, McLaren is primarily owned by the royal family of Bahrain, though it remains a public company.
