McLaren Palm Beach is a proud partner of Red Sneakers for Oakley. This food allergy awareness foundation works to educate and provide life-saving resources to schools, hospitals, first-responders, parents, and the public about food allergies in an effort to save lives. Red Sneakers for Oakley pursuits this mission through several programs.

One such program is the Red Sneakers Day event, which is held annually on May 20th. Through this program, Red Sneakers for Oakley provides organizations and businesses with the tools to host an event that encourages community members to wear red sneakers to expand food allergy awareness. Who Was Oakley?

Oakley Debbs was a little boy who loved to play soccer, tennis, and flag football with his many friends. A promising young athlete, he was very attached to his bright red sneakers. Unfortunately, Oakley was diagnosed with asthma and “mild” allergy to peanuts. Because he and his family weren’t properly educated about the dangers of food allergies or how to identify severe allergic reactions, Oakley passed away in 2011. Had Oakley’s doctors properly diagnosed him and educated his family on how to use Epinephrine and identify anaphylactic shock, Oakley would still be here today. Instead, his red shoes sit in the corner of his room as a reminder of his absence.

Red Sneaker Day: A Food Allergy Awareness Event

Red Sneaker Day is hosted by over 100 communities worldwide, including schools, businesses, and other organizations. On Red Sneaker Day, participants wear red shoes to celebrate Oakley’s life and to bring food allergy awareness. The foundation, itself, provides participants with educational materials about what food allergies are, why they’re dangerous, how to identify the signs of mild to severe allergic reactions, and administer Epinephrine.

Red Sneaker Days often incorporate another event, such as a soccer game, tennis tournaments, art projects, educational seminars, and food allergy book readings. All of this is in an effort to ensure the public knows that 1 and 13 children have a severe food allergy, and Epinephrine (not Benadryl) is the whole effective tool to stop anaphylactic shock.
