How to Check McLaren Engine Oil: Step-by-Step Guide

There’s so much variability in how our Wellington neighbors can drive their McLaren. If you’ve been able to make it to the track more often over the past 6 months, you’re closer to your next McLaren engine oil change than the driver whose McLaren has been cooped up in the garage during a busy quarter.

Going by bi-annual intervals isn’t as reliable for vehicles that are mostly driven on the track or during joyrides, so it becomes especially important to know how to check your McLaren oil level. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Park your vehicle on level ground.
  2. Put it in neutral and apply your brakes with your left foot.
  3. Toggle to the “Vehicle Info” section of your folding driver display.
  4. Start the engine and rev it at a steady 2,000 RPM for 120 seconds. A timer will count down the seconds during the oil level check.
  5. You’ll see the temperature of the oil on your folding driver display. Make sure that the oil reaches 194 degrees Fahrenheit.
  6. Once the timer hits 0, the oil change level will appear and let you know whether you need to top off your oil levels.

Find you’re in need of a top-off rather than a comprehensive oil change and filter replacement? If you have oil at home, you can top yourself off in just a few steps:

  1. Remove the service cover on your vehicle. If your vehicle was running recently, bear in mind that the components underneath the cover can be extremely hot, so take care not to burn yourself.
  2. Unscrew your engine oil reservoir’s cap. Top yourself off with approved engine oils. Consult your owner’s manual to determine what types of oils are required for your McLaren, and reach out to our parts department if you need to purchase supplies.
  3. Finally, refit the cap. Make sure not to fill your reservoir past its “full” line. If excess oil spills onto your engine block, you need to take your vehicle in for servicing at our garage to have it removed.
