Different Types of McLaren Tail Lamps & What They Do

There are six primary McLaren tail lights featured on the backs of most McLaren vehicles. Take a moment to get acquainted with the name and function of each of them:

  • Central High-Mounted Stop Lamp – This is your primary stopping lamp, and it’s placed at eye level to capture the attention of drivers behind you.
  • Stop Lamps/Tail Lamps/Turn Signals – These two lights fitted on the back of your McLaren perform three jobs: they signal turns, increase visibility, and indicate to drivers behind you that you’ve applied the brakes.
  • License Plate Lamp – Your license plate lamp increases visibility.
  • Side Marker Lamps – These lights help to increase your visibility as you turn.
  • Reflector – Reflectors reflect the headlights of other vehicles that are pointed towards your McLaren. You might wonder why a car has a reflector when it’s already covered in lights. This is because a brief reflection can really jump out at an incoming driver and catch their attention in a way that a steady stream of light from a McLaren tail light can’t.
  • Reverse Lamp and Rear Fog Lamp – These lights ensure that other drivers can see the rear of your vehicle when following you through fog. Bear in mind that these lights will only turn on when your light switch dial is aligned with setting “A.”

How to Operate Your Light Switch

Your light control switch is located between the driver’s door and steering wheel. At the far left of the dial, you’ll see an “O,” which indicates that your lights are turned off. One notch to the right of the “O” is the “A” setting, which stands for “Automatic.” In this position, many of your lights will automatically brighten or dim in accordance with the light levels they detect, as well as weather conditions like fog or rain. In the “1” position, which is second from the right, your side lamps, tail lamps, and license plate lamp will turn on. Finally, the “2” position will turn on your headlamps. To toggle between hi- and lo-beam settings, Wellington drivers need only shift their light stalk, which juts out of the side of their steering wheel.
