Understanding Your McLaren Tires

Orange McLaren F1

McLaren tires are vital to your vehicle’s performance. These high-end, luxury, high-performance vehicles need every part to work properly when you zip along Jupiter roads and highways for optimum speed, handling, and turning.

The helpful staff at McLaren Palm Beach will go over how to understand your McLaren tires, including McLaren tire numbers and symbols.

McLaren Tire Markings & Meanings

McLaren tire numbers and symbols let you know what your tire can do. We highly recommend getting new McLaren tires from a dealer’s service center, such as the one at our dealership.

Take a look at what the McLaren tire markings mean. You may see a series of large letters and numbers, or smaller letters and numbers.

Let’s say you see some large print that says, “245/35 R19 (93Y)”.

  • The 245 indicates the tire width in millimeters, or 24.5 centimeters. That’s about 9.6 inches.
  • The 35 shows the ratio of the height of the sidewall measured from the wheel rim to the top of the tread. It’s shown as a percentage of tire width. In other words, the sidewall is 35 percent of the width.
  • R shows the ply of the tire, in this case “radial,” and how the steel belts are arranged in the tire.
  • 19 is the diameter of the wheel rim, or 19 inches.
  • 93 is the weight rating. 93 means the tire can bear a load of 1,433 pounds (maximum).
  • Y indicates the speed rating. On a tire chart, Y means the tire can handle speeds of over 186 mph.

You’ll see other numbers, such as the heat resistance rating, where the tire was manufactured, treadwear grade (the higher the number, the deeper the tread), and the maximum load the tire can carry.

How to Check Your McLaren Tires

McLaren tire numbers and symbols help you see more details about your McLaren vehicle’s tires. But they are meaningless if you don’t take care of your tires.

We recommend doing the following to keep your tires in great shape:

  • At least every seven days, check the tires for cuts, punctures, tears, bumps, deformations, and cracks. Check wheels for severe corrosion. Damaged wheels could cause a loss of tire pressure.
  • Regularly check the tire tread depth and the condition of the tread across the whole width of the tire. Turn the front wheels to full lock in order to inspect the inner tread.

When the tread is worn to 1.6 mm, the wear indicators appear on the surface of the tread pattern, producing a continuous band of rubber across the width of the tire. Tires must be replaced as soon as the wear indicator becomes visible or sooner depending on a professional inspection.
