5 of the Most Impressive McLaren Technology Features

The McLaren brand continues to cement its status as one of the leading sports car manufacturers in the world. The British automaker is most notable for its bold and innovative technologies, which often break the mold when it comes to sports car engineering. In fact, here’s a look at some of the most impressive features created for the McLaren line.

Signature Carbon Fiber Structure

The F1 is the first McLaren to feature a carbon fiber chassis. Since its 1992 debut, all sports cars from the brand have introduced the similar framework. The MonoCell is common among the Super Series, while the MonoCell II is found in all Sports Series models. Both structures are lightweight and stable and offer superior crash protection for passengers.

The P1 uses a variant of the F1’s chassis, known as MonoCage, that’s incredibly rigid and solid while still being lightweight. The MonoCage II, found in the 720S, adds to the list distinct features such as a carbon fiber tub and wider door apertures. Meanwhile, the McLaren Senna is a prime example of the MonoCage III’s commitment to the track, with designated spaces for race helmets and suits.

Speedtail High-Definition Camera Mirrors

The Speedtail is part of McLaren’s Ultimate Series and was the first vehicle ever to swap the wing mirrors for high-definition cameras. These obscure “mirrors” glide out from the doors once you start the ignition and slide back in to combat air resistance. They’re much smaller than what you typically see on cars, yet they help reduce blind spots by providing a larger field of vision.

Brake-Steer Technology

Nothing makes you feel more confident than having the right components to handle road curve balls efficiently. Fortunately, McLaren makes use of advanced brake-steer technology that controls your steering attempts while cornering. The system also boosts traction by sending brake power to the inner or outer rear wheel as you enter or exit a corner.

Instant Power Assist System

Found in the McLaren P1 plug-in hybrid and used to describe its electric motor, the Instant Power Assist System (IPAS) is a truly innovative piece of hardware. It electronically assists you with raising throttle response while reducing air turbulence. The P1 was one of the first commercial vehicles to incorporate a hybrid powertrain and can return more than 900 horsepower using both the IPAS and standard V-8.

McLaren Track Telemetry

If you’ve ever wanted to keep tabs on your on-track performance, the McLaren Track Telemetry (MTT) app is the way to go. The manufacturer was one of the first to incorporate this data logging function on models such as the 570S, 675LT, and 720S.

What it does is transfer data to your IRIS infotainment system so you can see real-time stats such as lap and section times and vehicle diagnostics. You can also take advantage of three bumper-placed cameras that allow you to download data and video footage to a USB drive for further analysis.

Technological breakthroughs are nothing new for the British automaker. In fact, these sports cars wouldn’t be McLarens if they didn’t dabble in innovative engineering at least a little.
